Hello all!
I curate the Ideat village Short Film Festival, now in its 5th year (!) and we're looking to really spread out and gather some great submissions this year.
If you can send along this information to people or organizations that you think…
Question: what made your actor friend uber-excited about DOND moving to town? Sure it will have an economic impact, but I'm not expecting a weekly call for unknowns. BTW - JS a "talk" show is quite a strrreeeeeeettttttccchh. :)
David
They call me ETC. They call me lots of things, even late for dinner. Me and Rodney. Ah well. My students call me Mr. David, but you can call me just David. Or Dead Eye. I've developed this very slightly, nearly imperceptible, hardly noticeable twitch in my right eye, and some people have caught it and begun to have their schadenfreude. Salauds!!
My Story:
I was a big baby. All my life, people have told me "you're a big baby".... I'm a stage actor first, director and producer second, with a touch of film experience. My first role, FIRST SPEAKER in the Friends Romans Countryman scene, fifth grade. Before some, but not all, of you were born, I'd venture. "Me thinks there is much reason in his sayings."
Forty-plus years later and I'm still off-book!
Four years later, a story which requires supplied beer to coax out of me (sha!) leads me to the lead in a youth group adaption of "1984". Oh Brother, Big Brother, can you spare a jumpsuit? First curtain call, applause applause applause and I'm thinking "Oh, yeah..... I like this."
Started auditioning and getting leads in plays for the local arts council productions. Only one I didn't get was for "Gypsy". I was too tall. High school plays, college, and .... let's fast forward.
2000 Eugene O'Neill LPF #8, back in the show. Hitting every stage in town, and out. Spirit of Broadway, Chelsea Players, Groton Regional, Stonington Players, Avery Point Playhouse. You like me, you really like me.
Got a different idea. It needs to be better. Hate the regurgative community theater approach: learn your lines, hit your mark, make your exit, take your bow, repeat as necessary. Excuse me.... I didn't mean to yawn, it's just.....
Look - Godot never comes. The Salesman always dies. The Streetcars ain't runnin' no more. The Sound o' music is oldies. Thoroughly Modern Millie - ain't! The Odd Couple - ain't! Shakespeare - let the man rest in peace for godsake. What else you got?
I founded The Intentional Theatre of Southeastern Connecticut with two missions: 1) To stage new works by emerging playwrights, giving actors something new to do besides be Hamlet or The Nerd again, as well as audiences something to see where they didn't know when the gun goes off in Act 2, or if there even IS a gun, and B) involve the actors in the creative process, letting them determine what happens on stage since they're the ones gonna be up there doing it. When it comes to "director's vision" most I've worked with need to have their eyes checked.
For the first two years, we didn't even do a show. Acting workshops, character study and scene analysis, monologue workshops, everything that actors love to do but never get a chance to do because they have to hurry up and regurgitate.
Finally, showtime. Seven so far. Lots of "world premiere" stuff. One-acts, short play festivals, mixed media, all with new (or mostly) faces each time, all with heavy actor involvement. I could put you in touch with some who will tell you it was there best experience yet.
Not done either. More to follow. Stay tuned... the house lights are starting to dim.......
Also, I'm hosting an Events Listing page for Southeast Connecticut and beyond, and invite you to join up and post your casting calls and film previews (and more) at http://sectevents.ning.com
